Venmo Scam Texts and Emails: How to Spot Fake Venmo Payment Alerts

Venmo scams arrive in both text and email format — and they exploit the same core confusion: Venmo does send real payment notifications, so a fake payment notification from “Venmo” can feel plausible to anyone who uses the app. The scam formats range from fake payment confirmations to phishing attacks targeting Venmo credentials to elaborate overpayment schemes.

Common Venmo Scam Formats

The Fake Payment Received Notification

“Venmo: You’ve received $850.00 from [Name]. Log in to claim your payment: [link]”

This format creates excitement about receiving money. The link leads to a fake Venmo login page. There is no payment — there is no money to claim.

The “Accidental Payment” Overpayment Scam

A more elaborate version: you receive what appears to be a genuine Venmo payment — larger than expected. The “sender” contacts you claiming it was a mistake and asks you to send back the difference. By the time you discover the initial payment was fraudulent (often a fake screenshot, not a real Venmo transfer), you’ve sent your own real money.

The Security Alert

“Venmo: Unusual sign-in activity detected on your account. Verify your identity to prevent suspension: [link]”

The Account Verification Request

“Venmo: Your account requires verification to continue sending payments. Verify here: [link]”

How to Tell If a Venmo Notification Is Real

Real Venmo notifications: arrive from verified Venmo short codes or official Venmo email addresses (@venmo.com). Real payments appear immediately in your Venmo app — you don’t need to click a link to “claim” them.

Check your Venmo app directly: open the app. If there’s a real payment, it’s already in your account. If nothing is there, the notification is fraudulent.

Venmo never asks you to click a link in a text to log in and claim a payment. Funds received appear automatically.

What to Do and How to Report

Received a fake payment notification: Do not click the link. Check your Venmo app directly.

Received an overpayment and sent money back: Contact Venmo support immediately at venmo.com/help. Report to the FTC. If you used a bank transfer, contact your bank.

Report Venmo phishing: reportphishing@paypal.com (Venmo is owned by PayPal). Forward to 7726. Report at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
